Spotlight on Employee Volunteerism: Minds Matter
Our company is continuously looking for ways to support employees who want to volunteer in areas they feel passionate about. In 2020, several new and expanded efforts focused on employee board service training enabled our people to make an even bigger impact, sometimes working directly with our digital equity community partners.
We have enhanced efforts to match employees to nonprofit boards. Through a partnership with Cause Strategy Partners and their signature BoardLead program, we are pairing interested employees with organizations in Atlanta, Denver, Detroit, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh.
In addition, SERVE Talent Lab prepares high-performing, civically minded employees for nonprofit board roles. Sarah Tanner, Vice President, Marketing Strategy and Media at NBC News, was one of the first employees to participate in the nascent program.
Over six months, she participated in training sessions, including several hosted by Comcast NBCUnites partner Robin Hood Foundation. The workshops covered the logistics of serving on a board, such as committee roles, responsibilities, and understanding a nonprofit’s financials, as well as a deep dive into the personal meaning of board service.
Based on her interests, she was placed on the board of Minds Matter, one of our nonprofit partners that connects high school students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college.
In her first year on the board, Tanner has lent her communications and marketing expertise to advance the organization’s cause. She feels grateful that she works for a company that has provided the opportunity. “It speaks to our company’s commitment to its employees that it creates this outlet for those who want to serve.”
