Mona Dexter: Leading Pathways of Opportunity for the Military Community
Mona Dexter joined Comcast as Vice President of Military & Veteran Affairs in March 2023. In this role, she oversees military hiring, inclusivity programs, and initiatives engaging military customers and communities. Learn more about Mona and her vision of unlimited possibilities for military-connected talent and their families in the interview below.
What brought you to the company in 2023?
I was familiar with Comcast's reputation as a military-ready company through my work as Vice President and Chief of Staff at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Hiring Our Heroes program. In November 2022, I joined Comcast NBCUniversal’s Veteran’s Network Employee Resource Group (ERG) and participated in the New York City Veterans Day parade, where I learned that the previous leader of the military and veteran affairs team was retiring. A Comcast veteran encouraged me to consider the role, and after careful consideration, I felt it was the right time, place, and challenge. Although I’m not a veteran myself, Comcast recognized my experience and passion for supporting the military community, which motivated me even more to succeed in this role.
How does Comcast's commitment to the military community resonate with you personally?
As the daughter of immigrants from South Korea, whose parents experienced the Korean War, and as a former active-duty military spouse, I deeply understand the importance of supporting service members and their families. My brother served in the Army, and now my son is serving as well. My personal connection to the military has been a significant part of my life, and it is an honor to work in a community that values and supports the military, ensuring they have access to connectivity, digital skills, and career opportunities that provide a continued sense of service.
Why is it important for Comcast to hire talent from the military community?
We grow from learning and can gain so much from the experiences, perspectives, and stories of people from different backgrounds. The military community, in particular, is richly diverse and brings with it a unique aptitude for setting and surpassing goals, managing and adapting to change, and constantly learning new skills – no one in the military does just one job. At a dynamic company like Comcast, we need people who can evolve and contribute to our growth.
What initiatives at Comcast are you most proud of?
One initiative I’m really proud of is Operation Old Glory, a unique program that began with a Comcast field technician and military veteran who noticed a weatherworn flag out in one of the communities he served, and replaced it at his own expense, with permission from the flag owner. It has since evolved into a national program where our employees, as flag ambassadors, replace worn-out flags in the community free of charge. We source the replacement flags from a veteran-owned business, and we retire flags appropriately with the right military service organization or the Boy Scouts of America.
I’m also proud of our Xfinity Military program, which provides a suite of perks for military customers and our Veterans Network ERG, which fosters a sense of belonging for military-connected employees and allies. Additionally, we host a multi-day learning and development symposium for military-connected talent, providing networking and personal and professional growth opportunities.
What advice do you have for military service members and spouses interested in working at Comcast?
My advice is to learn about the company's culture and values to see if they align with your own. It’s also important to remember that your first role at the company doesn’t have to be your last—there’s plenty of room for growth here, and the paths to advancement are often non-linear. Be open to exploring different roles and departments, and don’t be afraid to take that first step.
What excites you most about your work, and what is your vision for the future?
The unlimited possibilities and the measurable impact we have, not just on the military community but also on Comcast as a company, excite me the most.
My vision is to continue developing military-connected talent into leaders across Comcast; to grow our military customer base across brands by becoming the preferred provider of connectivity and entertainment to homes, military bases, veteran and military spouse-owned businesses; and to tell more stories of service to highlight the pathways of opportunity created by military service.
