Xfinity Mobile: A More Modern Way to Mobile
Can you think of a recent invention that’s changed the way you live your everyday life more than the smartphone? These little devices are the thing that literally connects billions of people around the world for the first time in history.
And yet smartphones have come a long way, with the pace of innovation picking up rapidly in 2007 following the introduction of the iPhone. Today’s smartphones are powerful computers that help you bank, shop, video chat and do countless other things while on the go. This is a major shift that demands a mobile service built for high-speed data consumption.
At Comcast, we’ve been in the home internet business for over a decade, and now we’ve introduced Xfinity Mobile, a new wireless service which we built from the ground up for today’s Internet and data-centric mobile user. It combines the best of both worlds – providing access to the nation’s largest and most reliable 4G LTE network with the largest and most advanced Wi-Fi network. Thanks to this new approach, we can offer existing Xfinity customers a better wireless experience, for less money, on the most popular devices.
We can offer existing Xfinity customers a better wireless experience, for less money, on the most popular devices.
We designed Xfinity Mobile to offer consumers savings by giving all of our 25 million internet customers five lines, with no line charges, or access and early termination fees. You also get access to a massive Wi-Fi network with 18 million hotspots that helps you save more by offloading data. Equally important, you only pay for the data you use. About 78 percent of mobile customers pay for more data than they use. We're going right at the heart of that. We charge $12 per GB of 4G LTE data across all lines on an account each month. A majority of our early adopters are choosing this “by-the-gig” option.
Sure, another quarter of the market are heavy data users. My kids are in that bucket. They consume so much data on my plan that I often get a text message once a month informing me that my daughter has exceeded her data allotment and I need to shell out another $15 dollars before she gets turned off. It’s so frustrating. Customers in that camp don’t want to worry about usage, so they can go unlimited for $45 and have at it.
For families, who have individual users with different data needs, we let you mix-and-match different data options per device on a single account. So I can put my daughter and son on unlimited plans, while my wife and I pay per gig. That flexibility will save families real money and it’s resonating. Nearly 25 percent of our multiline accounts have at least one line using “By the Gig,” and one line with the “Unlimited” option.
Now, here’s the really cool part. Let’s say during the month, on any day, that you used 7 gigabytes and it would have been more affordable to have chosen the unlimited plan. Pop open the XFINITY mobile app and switch over with the click of one button. We’ll wipe your usage and you’ll only pay $45 dollars. It’s the ultimate price protection. And you can go back to pay-by-the-gig the next month, all at no penalty.
The way people consume media and entertainment has changed radically. That’s why we were quick to roll out broadband internet across the country more than a decade ago. It’s why in 2012 we launched our X1 platform that offers users easier access to on demand video, social media and apps all from the comfort of your TV or by using an X1 voice remote. And now, with the mobile Internet being more important than ever, it’s why we are evolving again by offering a new kind of wireless service.
We’ve designed Xfinity Mobile for the way mobile should be – a modern, simple, flexible and affordable solution for Internet and entertainment in and out of the home. Our goal is not to disrupt the wireless industry and become one of the Big Four, but rather to simply add a vital new service for our customers that will enhance their lives.
