2012: A Defining Year for TV at Your Fingertips
One main highlight of 2012 was the London Olympic Games. We partnered with NBCUniversal to bring customers the most comprehensive and unique view of the Games by offering an unprecedented amount of content and personalized control on live TV, on demand, online and through mobile devices. In the end, 219 million unique viewers stateside watched the Olympics across all screens, making it the most-viewed event in U.S. television history. It was a milestone TV Everywhere moment, but just one of several in the past year.
Prior to the Olympics, Comcast kicked off 2012 by signing a landmark, long-term distribution agreement with The Walt Disney Company that embraces the future of entertainment. It lays the groundwork for Xfinity TV customers to watch ESPN, ABC and Disney programming live and on demand and across multiple screens, in and out of the home. Already, great sports and family programming from Disney/ABC is available for Xfinity TV customers on Xfinity.com/TV, on the Xfinity TV Player app, and on the networks’ apps and TV Everywhere sites, where available. And there will be much more to come.
Xfinity TV also brought viewers more new ways to watch college and pro football, including the ability to live stream hundreds of NFL and college games from ESPN and the Pac-12 and Big Ten networks on Xfinity.com/TV. Sports fans caught up on the latest news and analysis on Xfinity.com, and searched for and recorded games on their DVRs using tools on Xfinity.com/TV, the Xfinity TV app and the Xfinity TV Sports Remote app.
Weeks before the new fall TV season heated up, Xfinity TV brought viewers special sneak peeks of season premieres on demand before they even debuted on live TV. Xfinity TV’s entertainment experts curated the best and most current TV shows and made them available across platforms, and TV fans are catching and keeping up on recent episodes at home and on the go.
Big news events also marked 2012. Comcast and NBCUniversal partnered to support those impacted by the storm, airing "Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together" on several networks of NBCUniversal and across dozens of cable and broadcast stations as well as through on demand, online and mobile platforms.
During this year’s historic bid for the presidency, Comcast made an unprecedented amount of live election news coverage instantly available to viewers across screens. Throughout the election season, Xfinity TV customers watched live-breaking news, event coverage, speeches, and all of the debates, and caught up on top campaign moments across devices.
In an ever-increasingly connected world, next year will have even more in store. And you can be sure our business, engineering and programming teams will continue working to bring more of the best entertainment choices across screens as well as to create new and innovative viewing experiences that keep Xfinity TV customers entertained and informed.
