Universal's 'Fifty Shades' Crosses $500 Million at Worldwide Box

The film, based on the blockbuster, best-selling book, has held the No. 1 spot at the worldwide box office for three consecutive weeks. Here are just some of the record-breaking highlights from Universal Pictures' global hit.


  • Fifty Shades of Grey was the highest R-rated opening worldwide in history and has gone on to be Universal’s highest grossing R-rated film ever at the international box office surpassing Ted ($332.4 million). Fifty Shades of Grey opened in 3,646 North American theaters becoming the biggest R-rated wide opening in history (based on theater count).

  • Fifty Shades of Grey grossed $156 million at 10,979 dates in 58 territories in its opening weekend ending Sunday, Feb. 15.  Including the U.S. holiday on Monday, Feb. 16, it grossed $173.6 million to reach the worldwide opening total of $266.6 million.


In its opening weekend, Fifty Shades of Grey grossed $85.2 million for the three day and $93 million for the four day weekend.  This makes the film:

  • The highest-grossing February weekend opening ever (three day).

  • The highest Valentine’s Day weekend opening ever (three day).

  • The highest Valentine’s Day opening ever ($36.8 million).

  • The top President’s Day weekend opening of all time (four day).


  • Fifty Shades of Grey opened No. 1 in 54 territories in its opening weekend, and has gone on to open No. 1 in 55 territories to date. 

  • Fifty Shades of Grey is Universal’s biggest opening weekend of all time in 35 markets. 

  • It is the biggest opening weekend for all films (all time) in 13 territories: Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Paraguay, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Ukraine, Uruguay and Venezuela.  

  • It is the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated (or its international equivalent) film in 42 territories.

  • Fifty Shades of Grey is one of Fandango’s top five advance ticket-sellers in the company’s 15-year history.

  • Fifty Shades of Grey is the top-selling R-rated movie debut on Fandango (tracked from a film’s pre-sales through its opening weekend).

  • Fifty Shades of Grey now holds Fandango's record for the most tickets sold on Valentine’s Day.

  • On Saturday, Feb. 14, Fifty Shades sold the largest percentage (65%) of tickets on mobile devices in a single day on Fandango.
