Straight Outta Compton’s Weekend Win Pushes Universal Pictures Past Another Milestone

Universal Pictures and Legendary’s Straight Outta Compton opened No. 1 at the North American box office this weekend. In addition, Universal crossed $2 billion at the domestic box office on Saturday in record time, passing the record formerly set by Warner Bros., which reached $2 billion on December 25, 2009, by more than four months.

With a domestic opening of $60.2 million—far exceeding studio and industry expectations—audiences nationwide embraced the powerful origin story of N.W.A, earning Straight Outta Compton a terrific "A" Cinema Score.

Straight Outta Compton is the sixth No. 1 opening for Universal this year and marks the studio’s twelfth weekend on top of the domestic box office.

Universal's production and marketing efforts—along with a smart late-summer dating choice, the heat from Dr. Dre's companion album and an exceedingly well-reviewed film—resulted in tremendous cultural buzz as the film led toward release. Straight Outta Compton was also the No. 1 R-rated August opening ever and the No.1 musical biopic.

Universal and the filmmakers are tremendously proud of their involvement in Straight Outta Compton and are confident that the great word of mouth will propel audiences to see the film in the coming weeks.
