Nightly News Wins 19th Consecutive Season Across The Board

Nightly was No. 1 in all categories for the 3rd Quarter 2015, delivering its best total viewer win over ABC since the fourth quarter of 2014.

NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt finished the 2014-15 season at No. 1 in total viewers and all demos, marking the broadcast’s 19th consecutive across-the-board season win.

Nightly was No. 1 in all categories for the 3rd Quarter 2015, delivering its best total viewer win over ABC since 4Q’14 and best A25-54 win over ABC since 1Q’14. Nightly was the only evening newscast to increase its total viewer audience quarter-to-quarter, improving +3 percent (+264,000) from 2Q’15 levels. Versus the prior year, Nightly was up +2% (+130,000) from its 3Q’14 average.

The NBC broadcast had its best 3Q A25-54 delivery since 2013 and its biggest 3Q demo margins over the competition in three years (since 3Q’12). Nightly was the only broadcast to post A25-54 demo growth quarter-to-quarter (up +8 percent from 2Q’15) and versus last year (up +7 percent from 3Q’14).

Nightly was also No. 1 across-the-board for the week of September 14-18, 2015, delivering its 8th straight win in all categories and 13th consecutive win among total viewers. The NBC broadcast has averaged over 8 million viewers for five weeks in a row.

Compared to the same week last season, Nightly reversed the demo gap with ABC by +331 percent (from a -61,000 loss last year to a +141,000 win this year). Nightly was the only network newscast to post year-to-year growth in the key A25-54 demo.

Nightly has been No. 1 among total viewers all 13 weeks since Holt was named anchor and No. 1 across the board for 8 straight weeks and 12 out of the 13 weeks. Nightly has now won among total viewers for 18 of the last 21 weeks, and 306 of the last 313 weeks.

Note: CBS is based on a 4-day average (Mon-Wed, Fri) due to NFL on Thursday.

2014-15 Season Highlights:

  • Nightly averaged 8.637 million total viewers, leading ABC by +368,000 (+5 percent) and CBS by +1.677 million (+24 percent).

  • Nightly averaged 2.061 million A25-54 viewers, +31,000 (+2 percent) more than ABC and +448,000 (+28 percent) ahead of CBS.

  • Nightly averaged a 1.7 A25-54 rating, tied for No. 1 with ABC and +3 tenths ahead of CBS.

  • Nightly averaged 1.479 million A18-49 viewers, +102,000 (+7 percent) ahead of ABC and +380,000 (+35 percent) more than CBS.

  • Nightly delivered a 1.2 A18-49 rating, topping ABC by +1 tenth and CBS by +3 tenths.

3rd Quarter 2015 Highlights:

  • Nightly averaged 7.960 million total viewers, outperforming ABC by +442,000 (+6 percent) and CBS by +1.641 million (+26 percent).

  • Nightly has now been No. 1 in total viewers for 31 of the last 32 quarters and 69 of the last 75 quarters.

  • Nightly averaged 1.961 million A25-54 viewers, +142,000 (+8 percent) more than ABC and +526,000 (+37 percent) ahead of CBS.

  • Among A25-54 viewers, Nightly has won 2 of the last 3 and 27 of the last 30 quarters.

  • Nightly averaged a 1.6 A25-54 rating, +1 tenth higher than ABC and +4 tenths better than CBS.

  • Nightly averaged 1.410 million A18-49 viewers, topping ABC by +158,000 (+13 percent) and CBS by +410,000 (+41 percent).

  • Among A18-49 viewers, Nightly has now won 31 of the last 32 and 72 of the last 75 quarters.

  • Nightly averaged a 1.1 A18-49 rating, +1 tenth over ABC and +3 tenths over CBS.

Weekly Highlights:

  • Nightly averaged 8.009 million total viewers, +386,000 (+5 percent) ahead of ABC World News Tonight and +1.696 million (+27 percent) more than CBS Evening News.

  • Nightly averaged 1.946 million A25-54 viewers, leading ABC by +141,000 (+8 percent) and CBS by +540,000 (+38 percent).

  • Nightly delivered a 1.6 A25-54 rating, +1 tenths more than ABC and +4 tenths more than CBS.
