Despicable Me 2's Feel-Good Hit 'Happy' Earns Oscar Nomination for Pharrell Williams

Universal Pictures' Despicable Me 2 has delighted audiences around the world, becoming the highest-grossing animated feature of 2013 with a worldwide total of $935.8 million and counting. The animated blockbuster is soon to become the third-highest grossing animated film of all time.

Part of Despicable Me 2's charm can be traced to its lively soundtrack, and no song captures the feel-good nature of the film more than the spirited chart-topper Happy, which has earned pop star, writer and producer Pharrell Williams an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

The nomination caps what has been a banner year for the pop star, who is fast becoming a household name, not only for chart-toppers like Happy and Daft Punk's Get Lucky, but also his behind-the-scenes work producing hits for everyone from Miley Cyrus to Jay-Z to Robin Thicke.

In addition, the pop icon has become one of the industry's leading innovators, launching 24hoursofhappy.com, which features Happy playing on a 24-hour loop with various celebrities lip synching in the song's free-spirited nature.

Original songs and themes for Despicable Me 2's soundtrack - five total - are credited to Williams. Despicable Me 2 itself is nominated for Best Animated Film, adding to NBCUniversal's list of 10 total nominations for Universal Pictures and Focus Features, with Dallas Buyers Club leading the way with nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. The Oscars take place March 2.
