Despicable Me 2's Feel-Good Hit 'Happy' Earns Oscar Nomination for Pharrell Williams
Part of Despicable Me 2's, which has earned pop star, writer and producer Pharrell Williams an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.
The nomination caps what has been a banner year for the pop star, who is fast becoming a household name, not only for chart-toppers like Happy and Daft Punk's Get Lucky, but also his behind-the-scenes work producing hits for everyone from Miley Cyrus to Jay-Z to Robin Thicke.
In addition, the pop icon has become one of the industry's leading innovators, launching 24hoursofhappy.com, which features Happy playing on a 24-hour loop with various celebrities lip synching in the song's free-spirited nature.
Original songs and themes for Despicable Me 2's soundtrack - five total - are credited to Williams. Despicable Me 2 itself is nominated for Best Animated Film, adding to NBCUniversal's list of 10 total nominations for Universal Pictures and Focus Features, with Dallas Buyers Club leading the way with nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. The Oscars take place March 2.
