Comcast Begins Rollout Of Residential 2 Gig Service In Nashville Metro Area
Nashville, TN
Gigabit Pro will be available next month to more than 500,000 customers in Nashville, TN. Service will be offered across the metro area and surrounding middle-Tennessee communities and will be the fastest residential Internet speed in the country.
Comcast today announced it will offer residential multi-gigabit broadband service to more than half a million customers in Nashville starting in May. Gigabit Pro is a symmetrical, 2 gigabit-per-second (Gbps) service that will be delivered via a fiber-to-the-home solution. Service will be offered broadly across the metro area and surrounding middle-Tennessee communities and will be the fastest residential Internet speed in the country. Comcast has announced Gigabit Pro rollouts in Atlanta, California, Chattanooga, Chicago and Florida, and plans to deliver the service to 18 million homes by the end of the year.
"Gigabit Pro will put Nashville residents right at the forefront of Internet speed and technology," said Doug Guthrie, senior vice president of Comcast Cable’s South Region. "This is an important milestone that follows years’ worth of investments we’ve made to consistently deliver the fastest wired and Wi-Fi speeds to the most homes in Nashville."
Gigabit Pro will be available to any home within close proximity of Comcast’s fiber network and will require an installation of professional-grade equipment. The company has fiber at the core of its network and, for the past decade, it has been extending it deeper into neighborhoods and closer to homes. To date, Comcast has built out more than 145,000 route miles of fiber across its service area.
"Today’s news is just another example of how Comcast is investing in Tennessee, and we are thrilled to be the beneficiary of the nation’s fastest speeds," said Nashville Mayor Karl Dean. "Nashville continues to enjoy a reputation as a technology-forward city that can offer residents and businesses alike the fastest speeds and best services in the nation."
Comcast has been delivering multi-gig (up to 10 Gbps) Ethernet service to businesses since 2010. The company currently serves more than 1.5 million businesses nationwide. Earlier this year, Comcast announced a technology partnership with the Tennessee Titans to deliver a redundant 1 Gigabit connection to LP Field that will offer fans Wi-Fi for the first time. The solution also prepares the team for future demand as Comcast’s fiber connections can easily scale up to 10 Gbps.
Comcast has been doubling the capacity of its network at least every 18 months and has increased speeds for its subscribers 15 times in the past 13 years. In addition to fast, wired broadband tiers, Xfinity Internet customers have access to the industry’s fastest in-home wireless gateway capable of offering up to 700 Mbps Wi-Fi connections.
