In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, Comcast NBCUniversal is proud to commemorate Dr. King’s legacy and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
National media coverage of civil protests, including a 50-mile voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, led by Dr. King and many other clergy and civil rights leaders, helped lead to President Lyndon Johnson enacting the historic Voting Rights Act.
The embedded video, shot by NBC News on August 6, 1965, depicts the moment the Act was signed into law, providing federal protections for people of color to exercise their right to vote under the 15th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The Voting Rights Act, and Dr. King’s efforts leading to its passage, is considered among the broadest and most pivotal civil rights legislation in U.S. history.
