The Holy Cows of San Diego, CA were selected for outstanding effort to build digital awareness of FIRST & STEM education.

Comcast, NBCUniversal and FIRST®  have announced San Diego, CA based "The Holy Cows" (FRC Team 1538) as the recipient of the 2014 Media & Technology Innovation Award, sponsored by Comcast and NBCUniversal.  Presented at the FIRST Championship in St. Louis, MO, this award recognizes a FIRST team that develops and implements an outstanding digital experience and marketing strategy to help their team in fundraising and in sharing the FIRST mission of encouraging science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education with others.

FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, and engineering.  FIRST annually hosts the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC® ) for students in Grades 9-12; FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC® ) for Grades 7-12; FIRST® LEGO®League (FLL® ) for Grades 4-8; and Junior FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL®) for Grades K-3.

"Comcast is a media and technology company at its core and because of that, we maintain a strong commitment to the advancement of STEM initiatives that inspire young people to be future science and technology leaders," said John Schanz, Executive Vice President and Chief Network Officer, Comcast Cable.  "We are proud to support and mentor FIRST teams each year across the country as they compete in local and regional competitions.  We are especially proud to partner with FIRST to present the Media & Technology Innovation Award, sponsored by Comcast and NBCUniversal to ‘The Holy Cows’ this year.  Their creativity, ingenuity, and inventive spirit stood out in an extremely competitive field."

"It’s wonderful that our FIRST Sponsor, Comcast and NBCUniversal, has made the 2014 Media and Technology Innovation Award available to FIRST teams once again," said FIRST President, Donald E. Bossi. "We believe that FIRST is more than robots, and through this award, Comcast and NBCUniversal recognizes the great work our teams do to develop their own unique team brand, and to creatively promote their team and FIRST within an ever-changing digital landscape."

Now in its second year, the Media & Technology Innovation Award, sponsored by Comcast and NBCUniversal, attracted over 150 nominations in 2014.  The teams were judged on criteria in the categories of strategy, overall experience, visual design, navigation, content, functionality and engagement.  "The Holy Cows" were selected for their impressive website design, which had a consistent look and feel across their media applications, their use of embedded, high-quality video content and their strong social media presence.  View the winning website and Twitter page here:  www.team1538.com and @theholycows.

Comcast has supported FIRST for many years through the sponsorship and mentorship of teams across the United States. In 2014, Comcast sponsored 54 FIRST teams nationwide, four of which qualified to appear at the FIRST Championship in St. Louis last week.
