Kevin MacLellan is Chairman, Global Distribution and International, NBCUniversal. He is responsible for oversight of NBCUniversal’s global distribution and international new media and television businesses, as well as identifying and executing international growth opportunities for both NBCUniversal and Comcast Corporation outside the United States. Accountable for managing commercial and corporate affairs in 36 offices with over 2,600 employees, MacLellan serves on the Executive Committee of Steve Burke (CEO of NBCUniversal).
MacLellan oversees free, pay and new media licensing deals across the US and to more than 200 territories internationally with a portfolio of 120,000 TV episodes and 4,500 feature films. Under his leadership, Global Distribution has secured long-term licensing deals with key partners such as Sky, RTL, Alibaba, Altice, and Televisa as well as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon.
With over 20 new media businesses worldwide, MacLellan runs digital strategy and operations for NBCU International which includes Picture Box, E! Zone and Studio Universal services in multiple territories, including the UK, Australia, China, and Japan. In addition, he conceived of and launched the reality on demand SVOD service hayu in the UK in 2016. hayu has now launched in seven countries and continues its successful global expansion. MacLellan and his team are also responsible for developing and building e-commerce and virtual reality businesses that are focused on global audiences.
In addition, MacLellan spearheads the company’s strong portfolio of international channel brands including Syfy, Universal Channel, E! Entertainment Television, Bravo, Studio Universal, Movies 24, Telemundo, 13th Street, The Style Network, and DIVA. He is responsible for creative and commercial strategy, including ad and affiliate sales, and channel operations. These global network’s deliver quality content to 165 territories in 35 different languages across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia.
MacLellan also has direct oversight of NBCUniversal International Studios, which produces over 1,100 hours of original premium scripted and non-scripted content for audiences worldwide. The division’s television production companies include Carnival Films, creators of the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning drama “Downton Abbey”; Monkey Kingdom, producers of BAFTA award winning reality series, “Made in Chelsea”; and Australian-based Matchbox Pictures, makers of critically-acclaimed and multi-award winning “Secret City” and “Glitch.” In addition, NBCUniversal International Studios operates thriving joint ventures with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner in Working Title Television and David Heyman with Heyday TV. It also operates a global formats business, which licenses and produces NBCU content in over 70 territories including “Saturday Night Live,” “Top Chef” and “Law and Order.”
MacLellan also focuses on working collaboratively with respective leaders for Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, CNBC International, Telemundo, Universal Parks & Resorts, and NBC News.
Previously MacLellan served as President, International Television where he led the re-organization of NBCUniversal’s television operations and digital businesses outside the U.S into a single integrated division. The combined International Television & New Media division positioned the company to take a more holistic approach to its portfolio of assets and optimize its value across multiple windows and distribution platforms.
Before his role at NBCUniversal, MacLellan served as President, Comcast International Media Group (CIMG) & Comcast Entertainment Studios (CES). In this capacity, he oversaw Comcast’s international television and new media properties, which included E! Entertainment Television, E! Online, The Style Network, The Golf Channel, and G4. Under MacLellan’s leadership, Comcast increased their international channel subscribers from 17 million to over 100 million. He was also responsible for all original production for the networks domestically and internationally, including popular franchises such as “E! True Hollywood Story,” “The Soup,” “Fashion Police” and “Live from the Red Carpet.”
Prior to Comcast Corporation, MacLellan was Vice President, International Television Networks at Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) in London. He was responsible for managing the company’s channel businesses in EMEA including development, programming, marketing, affiliate sales, ad sales, business development and JV partnerships. Before that, he was Director of Programming for Home Box Office (International) in New York and in Eastern Europe (based in Prague). He began his career in TV production and programming at several leading cable networks in the US, including HBO, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon.
MacLellan currently resides in Los Angeles with his husband and two children, and is a dual citizen of the United States and United Kingdom. MacLellan is a member and former conference chair of the Royal Television Society, BAFTA and The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. He is a founder of and board member for the Soho Recovery Centre in London. In addition, he created a scholarship program for disadvantaged students wishing to expand their cultural horizons by studying aboard entitled the Donald and Virginia MacLellan International Scholarship Fund.
