Carbon Neutral by 2035
We’re taking action towards a greener future by reducing our carbon footprint across our enterprise – going carbon neutral by 2035.
We’re taking action towards a greener future by reducing our carbon footprint across our enterprise – going carbon neutral by 2035.
We’re proud of the progress we’ve already made, having eliminated 960,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions since 2019 – equivalent to removing 200,000 cars from the road for a year. We have the roadmap to carbon neutral, and we’re letting it guide us to a better, more sustainable future.

To provide transparency and help drive improvement, we are reporting data using the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol consistent with the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) frameworks. We have partnered with a leading consulting firm to help further develop our reporting and estimation approach. We have also joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) on climate action, committing to set near-term emission reduction goals in line with pathways designed to limit global warming.
Our goal to become carbon neutral by 2035 starts with reducing the emissions we own and control across the enterprise. With purchased electricity accounting for the majority of our emissions, we are taking action to invest in clean and renewable energy. This means shifting to solar, wind, and other clean sources of electricity.
We sourced more than 1.2 million megawatt-hours of clean and renewable energy in 2022 – equivalent to avoiding the emissions from 170,000 homes’ electricity use for a year.
Our digital technology and customer support tools have allowed us to save nearly 9.5 million gallons of fuel since 2019, avoiding 81,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. We’re also continuing to install more telematics and fuel efficiency technology, and pilot electric and hybrid vehicles in select locations.
In addition to sourcing more clean energy, we are deploying new, energy-efficient technologies across our network that by 2030 we estimate will avoid the equivalent amount of electricity needed to power half a million homes for a year.
Comcast has been investing in a nationwide network transformation to virtual, cloud-based technologies that offer faster broadband speeds, greater reliability, and improved energy efficiency. We have reduced the electricity it takes to deliver each byte of data across our network by 36% since 2019.
We know the importance of reliable connectivity, especially during extreme weather and other crises. Our customers depend on us for access to crucial information every hour, every day. That’s why we’re constantly working to minimize service disruptions and offering new solutions like Storm-Ready WiFi to keep customers connected during storms.
We constantly seek to raise the bar to meet not only the expectations of our customers, but the needs of the future. Our commitment to sustainable innovation includes designing environmentally friendly products and packaging that improve the entertainment experience, save our customers energy and money, and lessen our impact on the planet.
We recognize that sustainability begins with design choices such as reducing materials, increasing recyclability, and utilizing recycled materials in products. That’s why our product designers are constantly innovating in pursuit of better, more sustainable products.
Many people may not think of reducing energy use while watching TV, but we do. Sky Glass was introduced as the world’s first TV certified as a CarbonNeutral® product. The smart-streaming TV integrates all hardware, software, and Sky Inside content into a single device, helping customers reduce electricity use compared to having separate devices.
We are innovating our packaging to be more environmentally conscious and user-friendly. Comcast introduced The Xfinity Eco Capsule™, a 100% recyclable and reusable modular packaging system for select Xfinity Video and Internet products. The patent-pending package is made with renewable, Forest Stewardship Council-certified materials such as responsibly sourced bamboo, sugarcane, paper and soy ink.
Comcast aims to recycle or divert cable equipment waste from landfills through internal e-waste management programs that require our recycling business partners to be Responsible Recycling (“R2”) certified. Comcast Cable partnered with Echo Environmental to recycle coaxial cables at the end of their lifecycle, helping to significantly reduce landfill waste and bring our cable and coax waste into the circular economy.
Environmental stewardship extends from the set to the screen through our responsible production practices and compelling storytelling that showcase the possibilities of a more sustainable future.
NBCUniversal leverages the reach of our programming and personalities to spotlight pressing climate challenges facing our world. Through TODAY Climate, Al Roker takes a deep dive look into climate changes, extremes, strategies and solutions.
The NBCUniversal Sustainable Production Program empowers production teams to integrate environmental best practices into on-set protocols for NBCUniversal film and TV productions. Over 70 productions across our film and TV portfolio participate each year, including the 2023 film, “Fast X.”
