One of the things I always enjoy about my job is traveling across the country to meet and hear about the young people who our Community Investment team works to empower each day.
Among them is Amani, an 11-year-old girl who aspires to be a cartoon animator. Since first grade, Amani has spent every weekday afternoon in a Boys & Girls Club in one of Philadelphia’s poorest neighborhoods. "It’s my second home," Amani said. Asked what, if anything, she wished the Club could provide to help her achieve her dreams, she said: "A drawing pad."
Amani has big dreams. And we want to help Amani to dream bigger. Beginning today in her Club, she will have 21st-century learning tools at her fingertips, including new computers, tablets, smartboards, digital cameras, digital music gear and more.
Provided by Comcast NBCUniversal, all this state-of-the-art technology is part of our floor-to-ceiling renovation of four Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. We are thrilled to give Clubs in Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington D.C. and San Francisco a $100,000 makeover to help celebrate the launch this month of something even bigger – a new, powerful technology initiative that puts young people like Amani in the driver’s seats of their futures.
This exciting technology initiative is named My.Future. It is the highlight of our new five-year national partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, which is valued at tens of millions of dollars in cash and in-kind support. My.Future will be available to the 4 million children served by each of the 4,100 Boys & Girls Clubs. The Clubs are longtime Comcast NBCUniversal partners and they invest in children who live in the same communities we serve.
My.Future will expose young people to the limitless possibilities technology can bring – from recording and editing their own music and videos to learning robotics, coding and game design. With more than 40 activities to choose from, My.Future will allow both technology beginners and those with more advanced skills to create their own portfolios and earn digital badges for completing different components of the program. It will empower young people to build, explore and communicate through technology topics of most interest to them.
At Comcast NBCUniversal, helping to bridge the digital divide is our No. 1 community investment priority. We are excited for this opportunity to expand our efforts by teaming up with Boys & Girls Clubs of America as the Presenting Sponsor of My.Future.
In our rapidly-evolving world, we know that media and technology are driving innovation and economic growth more than ever. I am proud that My.Future will help more young people, including Amani, embrace technology in this expanding digital world – and ensure they excel in it.
