NBC News won a Sigma Delta Chi award for breaking news coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings, it was announced today by the Society of Professional Journalists. Recognizing "exceptional professional journalism," judges selected this year’s honorees from nearly 1,800 submissions.

Within minutes of initial reports of a bombing at the Boston Marathon, NBC News was on the air. As the story rapidly evolved over the course of a chaotic week, the NBC News Specials team produced more than two dozen special reports, providing comprehensive coverage and extended programming on television and online. Led on-air by Brian Williams, with contributions from Pete Williams, Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie, Anne Thompson, Kerry Sanders, Ron Allen, Rehema Ellis, the Investigative team, and many others, NBC News accurately and thoroughly reported the often confusing developments as they unfolded each day.
