In 2008, we invited 35 students from a local elementary school to our Philadelphia headquarters to begin a journey. The students, or "Littles," were matched with Comcast employee "Bigs" for a Big Brothers Big Sisters workplace-based mentoring program called "Beyond School Walls." The program name comes from the idea behind it – throughout the school year, Littles leave the classroom to visit our downtown offices once every two weeks to participate in enriching, and fun, activities with their Bigs.
Five years later, Beyond School Walls continues to thrive. This school year, more than 300 Comcast employees served as Bigs to mentor student Littles at 13 Comcast offices across the country, from Seattle to Nashville to Manchester, N.H. We are proud that Comcast’s Beyond School Walls is the nation’s largest workplace mentoring program in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
The success of Beyond School Walls can be seen in the statistics, which show that Comcast matches have a higher 12-month retention rate, and participating Littles have better grades, are less likely to skip school and are more likely to graduate.
Don’t just take my word for it. Take a look at the power of our investment through the five-year match of one Comcast employee Big and his Little in the video above.
