Imagine thousands of engineers all over the country collaborating to develop the next generation of ideas and testing revolutionary technology — the kind of technology that results in groundbreaking new products and improved user experiences, like On Demand or the Xfinity TV app. That is a day in the life at Comcast Labs.
The advanced technology arm of the company, Comcast Labs is focused on developing, integrating and deploying products that change how people are entertained and informed. Tony Werner, Chief Technology Officer, and John Schanz, Chief Network Officer, joined Comcast in the mid-2000s, led the creation of the lab and brought together thousands of talented engineers, product designers and experience architects to build the products of tomorrow. The Comcast Labs team includes 40 PhDs, 10 Distinguished Fellows and hundreds of active inventors from a wide variety of educational backgrounds, including Web development, communications, semiconductor and other related disciplines.
Comcast Labs has development centers in Silicon Valley, Seattle, Philadelphia, Denver and Washington, D.C., and from these locations "virtual teams" collaborate with each other and top technology companies to transform current products and services, as well as create entirely new technologies. Our partners in this pursuit are large and small, including Verizon Wireless and Microsoft, as well as start-ups like the New York-based Bug Labs and Zeebox.
The results of this development model speak for themselves. Real behavior-changing products and features like the X1 Platform, the Xfinity TV Go for Apple and Android-powered devices, CloudTV and Xfinity Internet’s PowerBoost are all concepts that were dreamed up and made possible at Comcast Labs.
