Comcast NBCUniversal is a special company. We have approximately 159,000 employees across the globe who are passionate about the work they do and the world they live in. Together, we all believe we can truly make a difference. And that is a responsibility we take seriously and strive for every day.
Across all of our businesses and platforms, we have a unique opportunity to connect people to the moments that matter most to them. This past year was marked by some incredible moments that united our world, and some that threatened to divide us. Our company gave audiences a front-row seat to an event that celebrated the very best of humankind, the Summer Olympics in Rio, and shined a national spotlight on critical topics, like the ongoing water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
As proud as I am of the attention we brought to these events, I’m even more inspired by so many of our employees who went above and beyond to help when our communities, and our own Comcast NBCUniversal family, needed it most. This year, hundreds of our technicians went door to door delivering fresh water to Flint residents, while our Orlando team gathered with thousands of their friends and neighbors to honor the victims of the shootings inside the Pulse nightclub. These are just two examples of our people acting not just as great representatives of our company but as great citizens.
Giving back is part of our DNA, and this year we continued to grow our core initiatives that demonstrate our commitment to our communities. We sharpened our focus on bringing low-cost internet access to more people around the country through our Internet Essentials program. We have now connected 750,000 families to the internet, benefiting more than 3 million Americans.
In 2016, we also celebrated the 15th anniversary of Comcast Cares Day, a day of service we began with my father, which has now become the nation’s largest single-day corporate volunteer effort and which amplifies and exemplifies our year-round commitment to community service. In addition, we set a record last year with nearly $11 million raised during our United Way Employee Giving Campaign.
Throughout the year, we continued to focus on developing products and services that have a profound and lasting impact on how our customers experience and interact with the world. Our X1 voice remote has not only changed the way customers consume television, but also opened up a new world of entertainment possibilities to people with visual disabilities. That is what this company is all about.
As we launch our latest corporate social responsibility report, I am reminded of what truly sets Comcast NBCUniversal apart — impact. We have extraordinary businesses, game-changing products, and terrific momentum to continue to grow and succeed. But we are at our best when we are using our collective strength and influence to make the world a better place. Thank you for joining me in that mission.
