We’ve consistently offered the most speeds to the most homes, but with the current pace of tech innovation, sometimes you need to go to where the world is headed and not focus on where it is today.
The next great Internet innovation is only an idea away, and we want to help customers push the boundaries of what the Internet can do and do our part to inspire developers to think about what’s possible in a multi-gigabit future. So, next month we will introduce Gigabit Pro, a new residential Internet service that offers symmetrical, 2-Gigabits-per-second (Gbps) speeds over fiber – at least double what anyone else provides.
We’ll first offer this service in Atlanta and roll it out in additional cities soon with the goal to have it available across the country and available to about 18 million homes by the end of the year.
Gigabit Pro is a professional-grade residential fiber-to-the-home solution that leverages our fiber network to deliver 2 Gbps upload and download speeds. We’ve spent a decade building a national fiber backbone across 145,000 route miles of fiber. This new service will be available to customers that are within close proximity to our fiber network.
Gigabit Pro isn’t the only way we plan to bring gigabit speeds to customers’ homes. We are currently testing DOCSIS 3.1, a scalable, national, next generation 1 Gbps technology solution. We hope to begin rolling out DOCSIS 3.1 in early 2016, and when fully deployed, it will mean almost every customer in our footprint will be able to receive gigabit speeds over our existing network (a combination of both fiber and coax).
And having the fastest wireline speeds doesn’t matter if you don’t also have the fastest Wi-Fi speeds. According to two Allion studies, we offer the fastest outdoor Wi-Fi and the fastest indoor Wi-Fi. In fact, our latest advanced wireless gateway, which works using DOCSIS 3.0 and on our current network, is capable of reaching Wi-Fi speeds of up to 700 Mbps.
Our commitment to growing our Internet options comes down to making sure you have an amazing online experience. A big part of that experience is speed, and with Gigabit Pro, we’ve now increased speeds 14 times in the past 13 years. Over the coming months and years you can expect us to be aggressive, but deliberate, about rolling out gigabit and multi-gig services across the country.
We're proud to announce that we’ve now increased speeds 15 times in 13 years.
