Empowering Girls to Win in Science

Earlier this month we wrote about FIRST, an organization that's committed to making science and technology cool for high school students. One of the groups we wanted to highlight are The Firebirds.

This all-girl team from Mount Saint Joseph's Academy in Flourtown, Pa., took the Regional Chairman's Award at this year's FIRST Championships. FIRST has served these young ladies well. For the Firebirds, and all the FIRST robotics teams, the experience will give them technical skills, leadership skills and self-confidence that will last a lifetime. Comcast is a proud sponsor of FIRST and The Firebirds and we wish them well as they continue their pursuit of excellence in science, math and technology.

We have all heard many times that in high-school, girls often just don't fare as well as the boys in science and math. Why? A 2009 study of more than 200 students by Northern Illinois University researchers found that high-school girls are bored, disengaged and stressed in science classes when compared to boys. While every high-school student needs support and encouragement in their learning environment, there is a vital need to keep girls engaged in science, math and technology. A Comcast-sponsorship is making a difference for these Pennsylvania girls.
